£103m Boost for Scottish Renewables

Scotland’s renewable energy industry has received a welcome boost to the tune of £103 million – on top of the funding already earmarked in the Scottish Government’s Budget. The monies, which will come from the Ofgem’s Fossil Fuel Levy pot, will be invested in both onshore and marine renewable energy technologies, including the Pelamis Wave Power project currently being trialled off the Orkney coast.

The funding announcement was made by Chancellor George Osborne during a visit toa former oil rig construction yard at Nigg. The news has been welcomed by Scottish MPs, renewable energy companies and Friends of the Earth Scotland, who commented that: ‘The challenge now will be to ensure that it(the funding)is used in the best and most appropriate ways, to support Scotland's vast renewable potential.’

Wilding says: This is great news for Scotland’s renewable energy industry and shows the UK Government’s support for building a low carbon economy. It’s also good news for contractors with experience in renewables, as there’ll be a rising demand for their skills and experience north of the border – a demand we’ll be more than happy to help meet!
