Renewables to Help Boost UK Economy

Energy Secretary Change Chris Huhne has announced that renewable energy is set to boost the UK economy to the tune of almost £2.5 billion. Research by the Department of Energy and Climate Changes indicates that investments in renewable energy projects could create up to 12,000 jobs across the UK and, as Mr Huhne commented, breathe life back into our ‘traditional industrial heartlands’.

The announcement came as the Government published an update on the UK’s progress against meetings its target of achieving 15% renewable energy generation by 2020. This shows encouraging statistics including a 27% rise in renewable energy consumption and 46% growth in the amount of wind power generated between 2008 and 2010.

Wilding says: More encouraging news for renewables. It looks like the sector could play a major part in the UK’s economic recovery as well as helping us meet our environmental targets.’
