Government Renews Commitment to Renewables

The Energy and Climate Change Secretary has addressed concerns raised in the media about the Government’s commitment to the renewable energy industry. Edward Davey reiterated that there has been ‘...no change to Government policy on renewable energy’ and said that the ministers are actively supporting the industry’s growth.

He also reaffirmed their dedication to meeting the UK’s target of generating 30% of our electricity from renewable sources by 2020, stressing that ‘There are no targets – or caps – for individual renewable technologies such as onshore wind...(which)...has an important role to play in our energy future.’

The concerns reported in the media focused around cuts in onshore wind subsidies, which Mr Davey explained were possible because onshore wind is the ‘one of the cheapest renewables.’ He said current Government priorities lie with making sure local communities benefit from onshore wind farm projects, and in understanding the costs involved.

Wilding says: It’s a relief to hear that the current policy on renewable energy remains unchanged. Without ongoing support and commitment from the Government, there’s no way we can reach our carbon reduction and renewable energy targets by 2020.’
