London Array Onshore Substation Complete

Construction of the National Grid’s onshore substation for the London Array, the world’s largest wind farm, has now been completed at Cleve Hill in Kent. The substation has been connected to the 400kV Canterbury-Kelmsley overhead power line, which will flow the power generated by the wind turbines into the national transmission system once offshore commissioning activities are underway.

The London Array’s own onshore substation, which is located next to the National Grid’s substation, is nearing completion and is also operational. It will be connected to the National Grid substation in January 2012. Supervised by a construction team that includes Wilding personnel, Phase Two of the site’s outstanding civil works is ahead of schedule and should be fully completed by summer 2012 if everything goes to plan.

Wilding says: It’s great to see the London Array achieve yet another of its key milestones – and we’re hoping that with our on-site contractor’s leadership, the team will have the second substation up and running in good time too.’
