New Offshore Wind Project Attracts Investors

A new offshore wind farm which could be the largest in the world has attracted investments worth £6.5 million in just two years. The East Anglia Offshore Wind (EAOW) project – a joint venture between ScottishPower Renewables (SPR) and Swedish company Vattenfall – could be capable of generating a massive 7.2GW of electricity, enough for around 5 million homes.

The project’s impressive investment progress is down to the help and support of local contractors. According to the joint developers, these firms are already supporting around 170 jobs in the East Anglia region. EAOW Programme Director, Andy Paine, has underlined SPR and Vattenfall’s commitment to using local contractors wherever possible and also confirmed that the wind farm is on schedule to lodge its first application for consent.

Wilding says: It’s good to see another major offshore wind project getting the support it deserves from local businesses. Projects like EAOW can provide a huge boost to regional economies if, like SPR and Vattenfall, the developers are willing to award contracts locally.
