Poll Shows Huge Public Support for Renewables

A government survey of 2,100 people has revealed high levels of public support for renewable power sources. The poll was carried out on behalf of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in June and July 2012.

Key findings included:

  • 77% of people surveyed want electricity to be generated from renewable sources
  • Just 4% were against renewable energy
  • 73% were in favour of offshore wind development and 66% of onshore wind
  • 72% supported marine and tidal power.

The poll also found that the British public are becoming more concerned about energy security, with 74% expressing concern that the UK is too reliant on other countries for its energy supplies.

Wilding says:These encouraging poll results build on a recent surge in public support for renewables. It’s vital that the British public gets behind renewable energy, as without these developments, we’ll be faced with serious supply shortages in the foreseeable future.
