SMart Wind Project Plans Revealed

Detailed plans for SMart Wind, an offshore wind farm to be built off the East Yorkshire coast, have been revealed to local people as part of the project’s second phase consultation process. Part of the Government’s Round 3 development of offshore wind farms, SMart Wind is being developed by the Mainstream Renewable Power and Siemens Project Ventures consortium.

If it goes ahead, the project will generate up to 4GW of power which will be fed into the National Grid through a new onshore converter station built next to an existing substation at North Killingholme. SMart Wind has the potential to bring hundreds of jobs to the Hornsea and North Killingholme areas of East Yorkshire, both during construction and after its anticipated completion in 2020.

Wilding says: It’s good to see another large-scale offshore wind farm coming to fruition. If it goes ahead, SMart Energy could play an important part in helping the UK meet its target of generating at least 15% of our energy from renewable sources by 2020.
