UK is Number One for Offshore Wind Investment

Research carried out by financial analysts Ernst and Young has revealed that the UK is the world number one when it comes to investing in the offshore wind industry. The recently-released Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index sees the UK beating former number one Germany into second place, whilst China, Belgium and Denmark take third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The UK also leads the world in terms of offshore wind generation, with a total 3,321MW of installed capacity – more than the rest of the world put together. Since the world’s largest wind farm, the London Array, went live in April 2013, the industry’s overall output has been enough to power more than two million homes.

Commenting on the study results, Ernst and Young’s Environmental Finance Leader, Ben Warren, said: ‘There has never been a better time to turn the UK into the go-to market for investment in renewable energy in Europe,’ and highlighted the UK’s ‘huge offshore potential.’

Wilding says: What a great result for the UK offshore wind industry. However, our position at the top of the global tree could be at threat unless the Government continues to prioritise investment into renewable technologies in the forthcoming Energy Bill.’
